Simple Syrup

iced tea & simple syrup

An entire post on Simple Syrup!?! – but WHY!?!?!  For all you cocktail/mixology nerds out there, skip this read, this is for the layman.

If you didn’t already know this, let me enlighten you; life is much better with simple syrup!

Simple Syrup is literally just that simple; sugar and water.  Why this makes everything taste better, I am not 100% sure but my guess is that waiting for sugar to dissolve in a cold drink leaves it tasting flat and grainy and you end up adding more sugar because you want your drink to sweeten quickly.

You will need a medium sized pot.  2 cups of sugar and 1 cup of water.

In a pot heat the water and the sugar on low heat.  Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.  Once it has all dissolved, bring the heat to high and bring it to a boil.  Once it is boiling turn off the heat and remove the pan from stove top.   The liquid has become clear with a yellowish tint.  Let it cool to room temperature.

Once it has cooled you can now use it or bottle it for future use.  I like to use an empty Pellegrino or Perrier bottle.  It will keep for up to 3 months, store it in the fridge.  You can use this for all our cocktail recipes featured here, for your morning cup of coffee or your iced tea.
